A Few Good Men - Honor Essay - 897 Words
As defined by the dictionary, honor is a high respect that is earned through deeds and reputation. But, what is honor, and how does one receive it? Honor is like many things that are hard to put into words. Along with that, honor can be totally different, depending on your perspective. In the play, A Few Good Men, there is a central theme based around honor, who is doing right and who is doing wrong. The definitions of honor accepted by each person are so outstandingly conflicting that the play analyzes what honor is and at what cost is honor worth obtaining. To the lawyers, honor is a punch line. To the marines at Gitmo it is a necessity to survive. To the commanding officer, Colonel Jessup, it is authorization for the strong toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The fact of the play is a weak young man was killed to ensure a ââ¬Å"codeâ⬠and to instill in him ââ¬Å"honor.â⬠Yet, somewhere, there is a disconnect between real honor, and that honor demonstrated by Jessup. Jessu p has the honor of a bully. He helps his friends, and sticks it to his enemies. Meanwhile, real honor, as one of the accused soldierââ¬â¢s notes at the end of the film, is defending those who are too weak to defend themselves. It is to behave admirably and justly, not simply to follow oneââ¬â¢s orders, no matter what their cost. ââ¬Å"That Santiagoââ¬â¢s death, while tragic, probably saved lives.â⬠Jessup believes that, if one link is weak, the whole chain is weak, and that it is his responsibility to make it stronger. Jessupââ¬â¢s sense of honor to the Country is doing whatever is needed, at all costs. Jessup argues that while he might be ââ¬Å"grotesqueâ⬠he is necessary to defend the nation. He sees no other way to defend the nation except to force every man into a defender of it. To him, there is giving code REDs or there is watching the nation fall apart. But these two options are the same thing. He believes the nation is indefensible without ordering th is ruthlessness against his own troops, yet our values oppose code REDs. Jessup is a true patriot in his eyes. For years, he has selflessly served his country and probably seen many murders committed on the battlefield. In the implementation of the motivation across the organization, it allows the individuals to focus on the development of their work, in terms of behavior, skills and knowledge, ethics, and effectiveness.It is also defined that motivational approaches tend to energize the workforce which can result in their expected job performance (Byham and Moyer, 2005). In addition, the motivational processes increases or influences the job performance and other work outcomes of an individual that can reach to the employeesââ¬â¢ outmost performance and even their job satisfaction (Strain, 1995; Chughtai, 2008). On the other hand, some study contradicts that the information regarding the effectiveness of motivational approaches in building the employee performance.The performance is based on the perception and choice of an individual and it can be only achieved if the skills and knowledge are suitable to the position of the employees (Christensen and Wright, 2009). The motivation assessment test is adopted to measure the individualââ¬â¢s work-related issues such as the things that an individualsââ¬â¢ likes and dislikes regarding the area of their work that can, at least, affect their decision. On the other hand, the motivation assessment inventories which is almost similar to the tests, only not ocusing on decision making but in relation to the employeesââ¬â¢ nature of work and how do they feel on the motivational approach of the organization. In some cases like advertising it appears the conglomerate uses its size and power to reduce the cost to the individual companies; however I feel that the conglomerate could do much more to reduce costs and increase profits for the firms. They could be using their negotiating power to force suppliers into lower prices. They should encourage the individual companies to work together and provide ideas for each other this way they can strengthen relationships among the companies and create a more unified feel for the conglomerate. Finally LVMH should make sure that they are avoiding managerialism. They need to make sure the companies that are acquired are actually valuable to the conglomerate as a whole and that they are not cannibalizing profits from one or more of the current companies.
